Jim Helfield is an ecologist who researches factors affecting the habitat and ecology of salmon and other freshwater fishes in the Salish Sea region. His research focuses on rivers and riparian forests and in the processes that are affecting the habitat and ecology of Pacific salmon and trout, and the ways in which these processes respond to and recover from anthropogenic stress. A recurring theme in his work is the interconnectedness and interdependence of rivers and their surrounding watersheds, and the need for habitat restoration strategies to recognize these linkages.
